Abstract

Translation with precise terminology (key terms highlighted in brackets):

All praise is due to Allah, who revealed the Qur’an and made it a guidance for mankind. Peace and blessings be upon the one sent as a mercy to the worlds, the master of creation, and upon his family and companions.

This study addresses the topic of the morphological usage of the term [al-ḥarām (the forbidden/sacred)] in the Noble Qur’an and its meanings in the contexts where it and its derivatives recur. I have examined the occurrences of [al-ḥarām] and its derivatives in the miraculous Qur’an in order to determine their meanings according to their respective contexts. The study also investigates the various morphological forms of the term [ḥarām] and its derivatives in the Glorious Qur’an.

I first presented the meaning of [al-ḥarām] in both the linguistic sense ([lexical meaning]) and the technical sense ([terminological meaning]). Then, after tracing its occurrences in the Qur’an, I outlined the different meanings in which this term appears in the Noble Qur’an.

The research shows that the term [al-ḥarām] and [al-ḥurumāt (sacred matters/inviolable sanctities)], derived from the root [ḥ-r-m], appear in the Qur’an with multiple meanings. Among these are: [al-ḥarām as prohibition], [al-ḥarām as prevention/restraint], and [al-ḥarām as sanctity/honor]. The term [al-ḥurumāt] also varies in its usage and meanings, appearing at times to denote [rituals (manāsik)], and at other times to denote [sanctities/inviolable matters].
