Protected areas are a vital resource for sustainable tourism development. They combine environmental protection with local economic opportunities through responsible tourism that promotes nature and culture (ecotourism, nature tourism). Protected areas are particularly important for heritage sites in desert regions, as they offer a means of balancing resource conservation with investment in a fragile environment characterized by remoteness, aridity , and scarcity.
Determining the protection system for these areas, which is based primarily on the nature and exceptional value of the resources, as well as the types of threats they face, is crucial. This paper explores the concept of "special nature reserves" that commit to the comprehensive protection of natural and cultural resources at the Acacus Heritage Site. It discusses the importance of this in protecting the environment as a whole, encompassing both its natural and cultural elements, and its contribution to the development of desert tourism as a tool for sustainable economic growth. This is achieved through managing flow, avoiding damage to ecosystems, and involving local communities in tourism decisions and their benefits.
