Abstract

In the context of this study, seven tales from different cultural traditions were integrated into the university curriculum in the French department in Benghazi during the fourth semester. Students were requested to narrate these stories their own way. The results show that using tales enriches the students’ vocabulary, allows them to appropriate varied grammatical structures, and to develop their oral fluency. A number of challenges were noted in pronunciation, use of verb tense, and employment of pronouns. However, learners made a progress in organizing their discourse and memorizing the stories. Concepts of repetition, hesitation, and immediate self-correction demonstrate learners' devoted efforts at reflection and linguistic adaptation. The analysis of oral productions reveals that tales constitute an effective didactic tool in teaching French as a foreign language.
